Geocache Description:

Whereas the ridgeline affords a view worth taking in, this spot (to my mind) is less so.

I recall reading a geocache log entry where the cacher commented on the way some developers will construct public amenities which appear attractive at the time an estate is being sold, but are really no more than superficial window dressing. Not a lot of expense or effort involved in setting them up, and they deteriorate in just a few years, unless council invests in ongoing upkeep (or rebuilds the whole thing from scratch)

As I walked the meandering path through this too-small parcel of woodland, I came across the viewing platform here, with seating obviously intended for people to sit and enjoy (what I’m guessing) was once a woodland glade with a pleasant stream passing through it.

Now it’s just an overgrown swamp … my thought as I discovered this place being “What is there to admire here?” I’m guessing the developers tried their own hand at things … the layer of sandstone rocks (now overgrown with grass) was probably part of the feature (the stream bed just upstream has been filled in and made into a drain), and the stream in front of the platform dug away to make a “water feature” which may have looked nice in 2000, but is now forgettable (and forgotten).

The same thing has happened on a larger scale at Kolombo Creek in Oran Park, where Council is currently (2025) digging out the swamp there. The wooden walkways there have already deteriorated to the extent that they are too dangerous to walk on.

Many caches are placed so that those who come to the site will find being there a positive experience, as the CO has. But sometimes it’s not a bad thing for it to have a negative element to it … it challenges our thinking in ways we might not have expected.

Maybe his logo should be a bulldog! Hillster won't let go and gets a second FTF for the morning. Congrats!!
