Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!

Snallygaster

The Snallygaster is a legendary cryptid with origins in the folklore of early German immigrants to Maryland and West Virginia. Its name derives from the German word schnelle geister, meaning "quick spirits," a reference to its swift and terrifying attacks. The creature is described as a dragon-like beast with a razor-sharp beak, tentacle-like appendages, and enormous wings. Early settlers used stories of the Snallygaster as cautionary tales to frighten children into obedience, warning that the creature would swoop down and snatch them if they misbehaved. Over time, the Snallygaster became a regional legend, with reports of sightings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often near mountains or isolated farms. It has since become a celebrated cryptid in local folklore, inspiring festivals and even appearing on brewery labels.
