We all know that geocaching can take us to interesting and weird places that we might have never heard of otherwise. I figured that events could be used in a similar manner to point out curious events and stories, various odds and sods, that I stumbled upon while wandering around in internet rabbit holes.
On this day
in 1929
E. A. Wallis Budge put together a pamphlet to commemorate Mike "the cat who assisted in keeping the Main Gate of the British Museum from February 1909 to January 1929". Mike was brought to the museum as a kitten by Black Jack, another cat who frequently visited the museum, and was adopted by the museum staff. Over the years, Mike became popular with visitors and his fame reached even overseas. The pamphlet that contained several articles and photos as well as an ode written by F. C. W. Hiley was "prepared at the request of many friends of Mike, readers past and present in the British Museum, members of the staff, and admirers of Mike on the Continent and in America".
