Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!

Beast of Beckley

The Beast of Beckley is a mysterious cryptid reported in the forests and mountainous regions surrounding Beckley, West Virginia. Witnesses describe the Beast as a large, shadowy predator resembling a bear or a big cat but exhibiting behaviors that defy natural explanation. Some accounts suggest it moves with unnatural speed, appears and disappears without a trace, and emits unsettling growls that echo through the woods. Sightings are often accompanied by reports of missing livestock, claw marks on trees, and tracks that seem too large to belong to any known animal. The Beast is believed by some to be a supernatural guardian of the wilderness, while others think it may be an undiscovered species. Its elusiveness and enigmatic nature have cemented its place in West Virginia folklore.

Wait, I swear I just saw Mothman, where'd he go? I'll have to pause to reflect on this for a second...
