Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!

Spearfinger

Spearfinger, or U’tlun’ta in Cherokee legend, is a shape-shifting spirit with a single, sharp stone finger she uses to kill her victims. Often appearing as an old woman to gain the trust of her prey, she uses deception to get close before stealing their hearts. Spearfinger is said to be invulnerable to most weapons because of her stone-like body. The Cherokee believed she lived in the Smoky Mountains, near what is now North Carolina and Tennessee. Legends describe her as a cautionary figure, teaching children and adults alike to be wary of strangers and to respect the power of nature. To protect themselves from Spearfinger, the Cherokee would light fires and perform rituals to ward her off, believing she thrived on fear and isolation. Her tale is a chilling reminder of the dangers of misplaced trust.

Mmmm does anyone else smell that? Maybe Mothman is attracted to sweet scents, I'll make a note to test that hypothesis later...
