Welcome to Cryptid Quest! A Geo Art for those participating in GeoWoodstock XXI that are looking for a more relaxed and accessible caching experience while in the Mountain State. Appalachia has a rich culture and mythos surrounding the area, no more exemplified by the myriad of "Cryptids" that are rumored to be found nearby. Cryptids are an elusive class of creatures with sometimes supernatural abilities or appearances that, despite best efforts, haven't been proven to exist. Join me as we explore some of the Cryptids that may or may not inhabit the hills of Appalachia!

Mothman

Mothman is a legendary cryptid first reported in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in 1966. The creature is described as a winged humanoid with glowing red eyes and a wingspan of over 10 feet. Its sightings are often associated with fear and unease, and many believe Mothman is an omen of disaster. The legend gained notoriety following the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967, an event some claim Mothman foretold. Eyewitnesses describe the creature as having a strange, hypnotic effect on those who see it, causing a sense of dread and confusion. Despite numerous sightings, Mothman remains an enigma, with no concrete evidence of its existence.

The legend has permeated popular culture, inspiring books, movies, and even a statue in Point Pleasant. Today, Point Pleasant celebrates the legend with the annual Mothman Festival and a museum dedicated to the enigmatic figure. The festival features guest speakers, vendor booths, and tours of famous Mothman sighting locations. Enthusiasts and curious visitors flock to the event to explore the mystery and allure of this fascinating cryptid, keeping the Mothman legend alive for new generations.

Mothman is... a mother? I guess this whole time she was just protecting her nest. Well, I finally did it, I caught up to Mothman! Thanks for joining me on this quest to prove the existence of the legendary cryptid, but we should probably keep this a secret. We don't want anyone disturbing the nest of course!
