Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates.   Please solve the puzzle below to determine where the cache is hidden.

Almshouses were established in Britain from the 10th century to provide a place of residence for the poor, old, and distressed. They were sometimes called bede-houses, and the residents were bedesmen or bedeswomen.

Hatfield Peverel Almshouses

The Almshouses in Hatfield Peverel are known as Lovibond Cottages, and were built in 1820.

Martha Lovibond built and endowed the cottages in accordance with the wishes of her deceased daughter, Harriet Catherine Lovibond. The cottages were built to provide a home for two aged married couples and two aged single people, either natives or long-time inhabitants of the parish. Martha died at Tunbridge Wells on 11thAugust 1828, aged 58. She is remembered along with her husband and son on a family monument in Hatfield Peverel`s parish church.

The four cottages are made of Gault brick in Flemish bond, with a slate roof. They have Gothic-style casements with 2-centered lights, and moulded plaster ‘labels’. Each has a rear flat-roofed extension made of red brick.   There is a communal grassed area to the rear.

A Plaque on the front of the building tells of their history.

They were given a Grade II listing on 13th Mar 1986 and are maintained by a charitable organisation.
