In 1921 a restored medieval market cross was erected in the grounds of the church of St Margaret of Antioch in the village of Knotting, Bedfordshire, as a memorial to the three men from the village who fought and died in The Great War: Pte. George Henry Bailey, Lance-Corporal Joseph Law and Pte. Ernest Jesse Smith, all of the Bedfordshire Regiment.
The plinth and half the shaft date back to 1450 and to this has been added an additional length of shaft, topped with a canopied tabernacle with carved figures representing The Crucifixion, St. Margaret of Antioch, St. George and the Dragon, The Madonna and Child.
[Information from a transcription of an article in the Rushden Argus of 19th August 1921 describing the dedication ceremony.]
