Take the route down to Lady Clementi's Ride. The cache is inside the pillbox; watch your step around the door.
Hong Kong Island pillboxes were generally smaller, constructed of reinforced concrete only one foot thick, and had the Commanders Turret on the roof compared to those constructed in the Kowoloon HIlls. Air circulation was from a vertical airshaft outside the rear wall through concrete ducts externally across the roof, and into the PB through holes in the roof. They were all built as Machine Gun PB’s, loophole numbers varying from two to four to suit the locality, and the loopholes similarly protected by the same type of shutter. Access was directly into the PB, except in the case of the third PB at Wong Nai Chung Gap. Camouflage was generally stones/rocks rendered to the external surface to break up the outlines.
At the time of surrender on 25 December 1941, four companies of the 228th Infantry Regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army was preparing to advance against the Wanchai Gap and the pillbox. What was left of the Winnipeg Grenadiers would have defended the location. Find out more on the Battle of Hong Kong interactive map.
