Geocache Description:

Parachuting, as a national defense sport, was once widely promoted across China at the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China and became very popular for a time. However, unlike swimming or running, this sport, which involves soaring in the sky, requires substantial professional technical support. Therefore, to enhance training for young people in parachuting, almost every major city in the country constructed towering parachute towers, some of which even became landmark buildings. Over time, however, as cities developed, most of these parachute towers were dismantled, and parachuting gradually returned to being a military training exercise, thus fading from the stage of mass sports.

The Beijing Parachute Tower, the first of its kind built after the founding of New China, stands on the picturesque banks of Longtan Lake. Construction began in 1955 and was completed by the end of the year, standing 54.17 meters tall. After the Beijing Parachuting Sports Club was established in 1955, it quickly attracted thousands of cadres, workers, and students. In just over two years, more than 80,000 people participated in parachuting. In the 1980s, parachuting was removed from competitive sports, and the nationwide mass parachuting movement gradually declined. As a result, the parachute towers lost their original function and became forgotten, desolate places. Today, the Beijing Parachute Tower is surrounded by a research institute's compound and is no longer accessible. All we can do now is look at the abandoned tower from the nearby residential area.
