Clinkers are large, irregularly shaped fragments of lava crust that are characteristic of a'a lava flows. Around mile marker 24 of the Saddle Road, you can easily spot Colonel Klink-er. He is a fine specimen of basalt standing at attention and keeping watch over the Mauna Loa lava flow of 1935. Why not stop to pay him some respect and earn yourself a smiley?

Colonel Klink was a fictional character from the TV series Hogan's Heroes that most Americans from the Baby Boomer and Gen X generations will remember quite well!
