*** The Series ***
"On Yer Bike - Trumpton" is a small series of caches around the town of Trumpton (AKA Nyewood), which is designed to be done by bike (or tricycle as Windy Miller would do it), and as such all hides are close to the roadside and there's no need to abandon your bike to hike off for a find.
Recommended parking is along the main road where there are plenty of places to park by the road and where you can safely unrack your bike.
If you park at the recommended parking then the route is about 9.5km and includes a few gentle climbs, note that this route alone isn't cirular, but could be made so if combined with the other village tours.
While this is designed to be done by bike it can of course be walked too. If you wanted to drive it then there aren't really many places along the route to pull over and park while hunting so I wouldn't recommend it.
Whether you're cycling, walking or driving you'll find that the roads can be very narrow and while not very busy please exercise due care at all times as we wouldn't want to call out Dr. Mopp or the Trumpton fire brigade to attend any unfortunate accidents.
Note that the section between Fireman Pugh (minor) and Fireman Cuthbert can have very large puddles and lots of mud following rain, due to the runoff from the adjacent fields.
There are no refreshments available in Nyewood or Dumpford, though there is a pub in Elsted Marsh, towards the end of the route.
If you're feeling energetic then you could couple this series with tours of the other villages in Trumptonshire, namely:
OYB - Camberwick Green : Windy Miller (~7km, circular)
OYB - Chigley : Lord Belborough (~4.5km, circular)
OYB - Trumpton : The Mayor (~9km)
or see Tour de Trumptonshire for all caches in Trumptonshire (~22km as a round trip).
*** The TV show ***
Trumpton was a stop motion animated children's TV show produced in 1967 and was a staple of many children's TV viewing (mine included).
The town of Trumpton was the county town of Trumptonshire where Camberwick Green and Chigley can be found.
The show would open with the Town Hall clock hitting the hour and the animated clock characters coming out to strike the chimes. There would then follow a story based around one of the townspeople which would involve the Fire Brigade being called out for all sorts of minor disasters, but never a fire (Gordon Murray explained that this was largely due to the difficulty of producing flame and smoke effects with the stop motion animation).
The show would end with the Fire Brigade band performing at the bandstand in the park.
Did you watch Trumpton as a child? If so tell me about it in your logs!
