O medronheiro (Arbutus unedo), também conhecido nestas bandas por ervedeiro, é um arbusto mediterrânico, de crescimento lento, que pode atingir 8 metros de altura e encontra-se por todo o país. As suas folhas são persistentes, brilhantes e de margem serrilhada. Produz frutos arredondados e vermelhos, conhecidos como medronhos, que são comestíveis e utilizados na produção de aguardente.
Está bem-adaptada ao clima mediterrânico e é considerada uma espécie rústica, que pode crescer em vários tipos de solos (xistosos, calcários e graníticos) e até em zonas rochosas. Em termos de clima, tolera temperaturas negativas, mas não geadas nem ventos fortes e frios. Precisa de pelo menos 500 mm de precipitação anual, mas é resistente à secura do solo e da atmosfera, assim como às temperaturas elevadas na estação quente.
Ocorre geralmente nos bosques e matagais de diversas tipologias, de forma espontânea e é uma espécie apetecível para a diferente fauna existente, a sua copa permanente e o facto de manter flores e frutos durante o outono e inverno destaca o medronheiro e faz com que seja procurado como fonte de pólen e alimento por insetos, aves e mamíferos.
O medronheiro tem um grande valor ecológico e económico, tem sido fomentado um pouco por todo o país e também nos Baldios de Vilarinho reconhece-se a sua valorização para a paisagem e para a potencial mais-valia local.

The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), also known in these parts as the ervedeiro, is a slow-growing Mediterranean shrub that can reach a height of 8 metres and is found all over the country. Its leaves are persistent, shiny and have a serrated edge. It produces rounded, red fruits, known as medronhos, which are edible and used in the production of brandy.
It is well adapted to the Mediterranean climate and is considered a rustic species that can grow in various types of soil (schist, limestone and granite) and even in rocky areas. In terms of climate, it tolerates negative temperatures, but not frosts or strong, cold winds. It needs at least 500 mm of annual rainfall, but is resistant to drying out of the soil and atmosphere, as well as high temperatures in the hot season.
It generally occurs spontaneously in woods and scrubland of various types and is an attractive species for the different fauna that exist. Its permanent canopy and the fact that it keeps flowers and fruit during autumn and winter make the strawberry tree stand out and makes it sought after as a source of pollen and food by insects, birds and mammals.
The strawberry tree has great ecological and economic value and has been promoted all over the country. In the Baldios de Vilarinho, too, its value to the landscape and potential local added value is recognised.
