Geocache Description:

Geology of Veliki Samograd

English Bosnian

Stay away from the edge!

Veliki Samograd is a spectacular sinkhole formed by the collapse of a karst cave ceiling, revealing the underground world beneath. This natural feature is part of the Dinaric Karst System, a landscape shaped over millions of years by the dissolution of limestone.

This Earthcache will teach you about the formation of sinkholes, the role of water in shaping karst landscapes, and the ongoing geological processes at work in this region.

What is a Sinkhole?
A sinkhole, also known as doline, forms when the ground collapses into an underground cavity. In karst landscapes, water slowly dissolves limestone, creating voids beneath the surface. As these voids grow, the land above weakens and eventually collapses, creating a sinkhole.

The Formation of Veliki Samograd
Veliki Samograd formed in Mesozoic limestone, which was deposited 150–200 million years ago when a shallow sea covered the area. Over time, acidic rainwater gradually dissolved the limestone, creating underground caves. Eventually, the roof of one of these caves collapsed, exposing a natural window into the underground and creating the Veliki Samograd sinkhole.

Signs of Karst Processes
The steep walls of the sinkhole expose layers of limestone along with fractures caused by tectonic activity. Water continues to seep through cracks, gradually enlarging underground voids and increasing the likelihood of future collapses. The vegetation inside the sinkhole differs from the surrounding landscape due to the unique microclimate created within the depression.

Logging this Earthcache
To log this Earthcache, please solve the following tasks and send them to me (Email or Messagecenter):

1. Describe the color, texture, and layering of the exposed rock. Do limestone and dolomite differ?
2. Look for erosion, sediments, or moisture. How does water shape the doline?
3. Provide an estimate of the diameter and depth of a doline, along with a description of its shape.
4. Optional but greatly appreciated: Take a photo of yourself and post with your log.

You can log immediately. You don't have to wait for an answer.

Have fun with the cache!

Držite se dalje od ivice!

Veliki Samograd je spektakularna vrtača nastala urušavanjem tavanice kraške pećine, otkrivajući podzemni svijet ispod sebe. Ovo prirodno obilježje dio je dinarskog krškog sistema, krajolika oblikovanog milionima godina otapanjem krečnjaka.

Ovaj Earthcache će vas naučiti o formiranju vrtača, ulozi vode u oblikovanju kraških pejzaža i tekućim geološkim procesima u ovoj regiji.

1. Opišite boju, teksturu i slojevitost izložene stijene. Da li se krečnjak i dolomit razlikuju?
2. Potražite eroziju, sedimente ili vlagu. Kako voda oblikuje doline?
3. Navedite procjenu prečnika i dubine udubljenja, zajedno s opisom njegovog oblika.
