Geocache Description:

**** When logging this cache please comment on the state of the "detour" track to help future finders of this and other caches along the track as conditions may change over time ****

"Do you feel the need, the need for speed?"

"Then you're gonna wanna take a ride into the Danger Zone."

"No need to be inverted, or write cheques your body can't cash. Just stay above the hard deck so you don't crash and burn."

"Go ballistic and fire when you're goddam good and ready. There's no points for second place."

If you were around in 1986 you may know these lines from the movie "Top Gun", starring Tom Cruise before the world found out what a weird control-freak nut-job he was.  The song "Danger Zone" has become synonymous with this movie.

When you get close to this cache after a beach trudge from the Ocean Beach end, there is a sign that you are at the end of the "danger zone", hence the name of this cache.

Access from Ocean Beach

This cache is very near the slip that happened in early 2022 about 1.5km from the Ocean Beach end and resulted in signs at either end of the route claiming there is "no safe route" to and from the Ocean Beach end.  Notices to this effect have also been posted on various cycle trail pages.

Despite being "closed" at times, the track has always been navigable by walking or pushing bikes along short sections of the beach to avoid any slips so don't be put off by any so-called closure notices.

A couple of times a track has been formed across the slip only for it to be washed away by another torrential downpour.

As at November 2025 the slip has blown out again and whereas previously it was possible to scramble down the Ocean Beach side of the slip and follow the beach for 100 metres to get to this cache, it is now not passable (although for the adventurous among us not weighed down by a loaded bike maybe it possibly is ....) and there is a 15 min beach trudge to get around it - refer the 2 waypoints when heading from Ocean Beach and this helpful map:

NOTE - DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE "BIG COAST" TRACK AS IT FOLLOWS FARM ROADS AROUND THE COAST

Phone coverage

Suprisingly, at GZ there is both phone and internet coverage (Vodafone, not sure about other providers) but there may not be along the whole coastline.
