The Bryngwyn Incline carried slate carts from Bryngwyn Station to a location known as The Drumhead at Fron Heulog. Unusually, the railway company owned the incline itself rather than it being part of a private tramway.
Despite the cable system that simultaneously dragged empty slate carts up the incline whilst allowing full carts to be eased down, rumors suggest that attempts were also made to operate it with a locomotive due to its relatively shallow gradient—approximately 75 meters of vertical height over 900 meters.
