4th Paddle in the Leprechaun Dust
Saturday, March 15th, 2025, 11:00am-11:30am
!!LAUNCH TIME 10:30AM from REI launch!!

You are welcome to launch earlier but they will not let you into the dyed section until they are finished which is usually around 11:00am

Time is tentative and may change, please post a will attend to be notified of changes.
This event is on the water in the Chicago River. If you are not on the river you are not at the event.

Each year(except for 2020), as part of the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, the Chicago River gets dyed an amazing shade of green. It’s incredible, and if you ever get a chance (even if you AREN’T Irish), you need to see it. They estimate 400,000 people line the streets, bridges, and watch from the nearby buildings. What's better than seeing it, being a part of it. Avoid the crowds, grab your kayak, and lets paddle to the Green Zone or GZ. Crossed this one off the bucket list in 2019 and had a blast so we wanted to do it again. 2021 was brutally cold but 6 brave attendees paddled and survived.

We are launching at 10:30am from REI Launch(see waypoints). This is a free public boat ramp for paddle craft. It is also a board safe launch. The event is approximately 2 miles downstream from the launch, about a 30 min paddle. There will be boat traffic and wakes. This part of the river is recommended for experienced kayakers only.

There is a 20 minute loading and unloading zone in front of REI. Or you may be able to unload in the turnaround at the end of Eastman St. right by the launch. There is some free and some paid street parking along the blocks nearby. PLEASE allow yourself plenty of time to unload and get ready including moving vehicle to legal parking and walking back. DO NOT park in the lot across from REI at Kingsbury Center or you will get towed.

It could be 10 deg., it could be 80. Stay tuned for weather forecasts as we get closer. Either way, dress appropriately. It is the Chicago River, it is polluted, keep that in mind. Should be no issues staying dry with this type of boat launch.

If you need to stay overnight you might want to get that reservation in soon.

If you have another way or plan to get to GZ, you are welcome to join us but you must be on the water for the event.
Please post a will attend to be notified of announcements.
