The kids have hidden another cache in our of our favourite local spots, Hodges Park which also has an interesting history.
This can be accessed from several nearby streets including Tuatara Drive, Ford Ave and Moehau.
This area was previously part of the Moehau block, which covered land from Tuatara Drive in the West, to Ford Ave in the east, between 3 Mile Bush Road and the hill. A total of 27 Acres. The original Moehau homestead was a turret house built for Matilda Sissons. The bridge was built in about 1894, by English stonemason Thomas Cameron, to cross the Otapapa stream in the middle of the property,to access the famous orchard. Each stone carefully chosen and shaped to fit perfectly with no cement. The arch is self supporting by skillful shaping of each stone.
As it sits today, the bridge is still in great condition with the addition of a concrete path overtop. This path leads to the hidden Hodges Park, which is a lovely little gem featuring mature native trees, grass areas and the Otapapa stream. Take some time to visit a fantastic oasis of quiet.
Just watch out for any trolls as you cross!
