Geocache Description:

In honour of the WW1 soldiers named on the Keyworth Memorial on Nottingham Road - the 3 new housing estates  Spinners Croft, Keyworth Rise, and Nicker Hill all take their street names from the soldiers who gave thier lives in World War One.  These caches are placed in honour of their memories - they are all local to Keyworth in some way.  Many of these families were long established in the small community of Keyworth (787 total population made up of  372 males and 415 female - as in 1911 census summary books).

George Gordon Bennett was born in 1893 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, the son of the Revd. George William & Laura Anne Bennett (nee Newbould), who were married in 1889 at Worksop.  George William Bennett was a Congregational Minister. The Congregational chapel in Keyworth, was founded here in 1768 and this church was rebuilt in 1902. This building is now the United Reformed Church.

George's siblings were Emily Hilda and Sibyl Gertrude. His Fathers parents were  George & Eliza Bennett  (nee Ardron).  His Mothers parents were Charles & Agnes Newbould (nee Riply).

Between 1901 and 1911, the family had moved to Nottingham from Worksop residing at The Manse, Keyworth next door to the  church (the headquarters building of the old British Legion on the corner of Bunny Lane and Nottingham Road). A newer "Manse house" is located a little further down Nottingham Road, across the road from the memorial gates.

The census of 1911 shows the family there with George (aged 17) his occupation was as a photographic chemist and on optical instruments for a well known company.  The family were still living at The Manse in 1921.

George Gordon Bennett - Signaller Private 266808 1st/5th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby regiment). He enlisted in 1915 and had been in France only a few months when he fell in action. He was killed on 19th September 1917 aged 24.  He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Bennett Gardens is named in his honour at the housing estate at Spinners Croft on Station Road/Platt Lane, Keyworth.

The Cache  -  This is a straight forward cache placed near the Congregational church (now the United Reformed Church) and The Manse where they lived.
