Introduction
In 228 Peace Park, there is a marble sculpture titled Earth and Mother, created by sculptor Chang Tzu-Lung. The sculpture is made from Marble Rosa Portuguese, a unique type of marble known for its flowing pink patterns that preserve the geological memory of the Earth.

The sculpture's gentle curves resemble a mother’s embrace, while the marble's veins record hundreds of millions of years of geological changes - beginning as marine sediments, then buried deep underground, undergoing high temperature and pressure metamorphism, and finally being sculpted into this artwork.
Geological Knowledge: Marble Rosa Portuguese
Origin
This type of marble originates mainly from the Alentejo region of Portugal, particularly around Vila Viçosa, Estremoz, and Borba. This area is rich in marble deposits and is known as the "Marble Capital of Portugal."
Geological Characteristics
Rock Type: Metamorphic rock (marble), primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).
Formation: Formed through the metamorphism of limestone. Under high temperature and pressure, the original limestone recrystallizes, resulting in a fine-grained texture that gives the marble a jade-like quality.
Formation of Veins
The veins in Marble Rosa Portuguese formed during metamorphism, influenced by crustal pressure, hydrothermal infiltration, and mineral movement. The process is as follows:
1. Metamorphism: Limestone, buried deep in the Earth’s crust, undergoes high-temperature and high-pressure transformation into marble, developing fractures.
2. Mineral Flow and Infiltration: Mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids penetrate the fractures, depositing various minerals that create the different vein colors.
3. Pressure Changes and Deformation: Continued tectonic movement compresses the marble, causing the veins to bend, shift, and deform into wave-like or swirling patterns.
4. Weathering and Exposure: As the crust uplifts, the once-hidden veins become visible on the surface, forming the intricate patterns we see in the marble today.
In addition to marble, other types of rocks also have textures formed by mineral flow and infiltration or precipitation.

Colors and Mineral Composition of Veins
Pink: Caused by trace amounts of iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), giving the calcium carbonate a warm pink hue.
White: Formed by pure calcite (CaCO₃), resulting in a clean white or translucent appearance.
Brown: Derived from iron oxides (such as hematite, Fe₂O₃) or clay minerals (such as kaolinite), creating warm brown or yellowish tones.
Gray/Black: Likely due to the presence of graphite or organic material residues.
Blue: The result of trace amounts of copper or sulfide minerals, giving the marble its rare cool-toned veining.
These veins capture the dynamic history of Earth’s interior and represent an artistic crystallization of time and minerals. On the Earth and Mother sculpture, we can clearly see how these veins intertwine, symbolizing the power of the Earth and the flow of life.
