普通の砂岩とは？
砂岩は堆積岩で、海砂の古代の層が深く埋もれ、圧力によって岩石になったものです。
砂岩は、石英や長石の珪酸塩砂粒が他の鉱物によって互いに固められ、まるで硬い接着剤のようです。
普通の砂岩は水に対して多孔質であるため、冬に水分が凍るとゆっくりと崩れます。400年以上の天候によって損傷した近くの古い墓石でこれを見ることができます。
火山砂岩とは？
火山砂岩は、火山から噴出した灰の層でできた火成岩起源の堆積岩です。灰が埋まるたびに深く埋もれるにつれて、圧力によってゆるい灰から固い岩に変化しました。
普通の砂岩（砂でできたもの）とは異なり、この灰砂岩は水に強く、時間が経っても形を保ちます。そのため、めがね橋などの建造物に最適です。
長崎の火山砂岩は風頭石と呼ばれています。ここに見える石の表面は、400年前に採石場の労働者がハンマーとくさびを使って露出させたものです（四角い穴を探してください！）。
この採石場は現在、風頭公園と呼ばれています。
What is ordinary sandstone?
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock, made from ancient layers of sea sand buried deep and made into rock by pressure.
It is made of silicate sand grains of quartz or feldspar that are cemented to each other by other minerals, much like a hard glue.
Ordinary sandstone is porous to water, so it will slowly crumble when moisture freezes in winter. You can see this on old gravestones nearby that have been damaged by the weather over 400 years.
What is volcanic sandstone?
Volcanic sandstone is a sedimentary rock with an igneous origin, made of layers of ash erupted from volcanoes. As the ash got buried deeper each time, pressure caused it to change from loose ash into solid rock.
Unlike ordinary sandstone (made of sand), this ash sandstone is resistant to water and keeps its shape over time. This made it ideal for building Megane Bridge and other structures.
Nagasaki’s volcanic sandstone is called Kazagashira Stone. The face of the stone you see here was exposed 400 years ago by quarry workers using hammers and wedges (look for the square holes!).
This quarry is now called Kazagashira Park.
