Who doesn't love a Cemetery Cache!!!
The Shepparton Cemetery, at the time of the early European settlers used to be the existing carpark area above Princess Park and across from Shepparton Library. By 1878, it was clear that a new site would need to be developed for the Shepparton Cemetery. As the only hills in the vicinity were on Rudd Road this was the site selected as the new cemetery and continues to be the Shepparton Public Cemetery, almost 150 years later. The first recorded burial at the current site was Andrew Larson aged 3 years, buried in 1876.
The Cemetery's most famous resident would be soldier and politician, Brigadier Sir Murray William James Bourchier CMG, DSO. VD (4 April 1881 - 16 December 1937). He served with the Australian 4th Light Horse Regiment during World War 1 in Gallipoli and the Middle East. Bourchier was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 15 March 1917 and took command of the 4th Light Horse Regiment. He led the 4th and 12th Regiments at the Battle of Beersheba on 31 October, 1917. For this he received the Distinguished Service Order
After the war he returned to the family farm he grew up on near Strathmerton. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1920 and rose to be Deputy Premier of Victoria during World War 2. He died in London in 1937 and was posthumously knighted in 1938.
Bourchier is well remembered in the district with several streets and parks as well as Shepparton's Bourchier Street Primary School named after him.
There is a fabulous statue of Brigadier Sir Murray Bourchier riding a horse with his pistol drawn in the Queen's Gardens in Shepparton that is a must see and while you're there you should grab Cybergran V's Virtual Cache Brigadier Sir Murray Bourchier GC9P7AZ
