The Last Gentleman
A Tribute to Walker Percy
Walker Percy (1916–1990) was one of the most celebrated Southern novelists of the 20th century, blending philosophy, existentialism, and Southern Gothic themes into his works. Born in Alabama and later settling in Covington, Louisiana, Percy initially pursued medicine before contracting tuberculosis, which led him to a lifelong engagement with literature and philosophy. His debut novel, The Moviegoer (1961), won the National Book Award and established him as a major literary figure. Other notable works include The Last Gentleman (1966), Love in the Ruins (1971), Lancelot (1977), The Second Coming (1980), and The Thanatos Syndrome (1987).
Percy had a deep connection to Covington, Louisiana, where he spent much of his later life, writing and reflecting on themes of identity, alienation, and the modern Southern experience. In honor of his literary legacy, a bronze sculpture of Percy was crafted by artist William Binnings and now resides in Bogue Falaya Park. The statue captures Percy in a contemplative pose, a fitting tribute to a writer who spent his life exploring the complexities of human existence.
About the Cache
This is a traditional cache, subtly camouflaged to blend with its surroundings. While not overly difficult, it requires a bit of keen observation to locate. It is positioned at about eye level in a magnetic container within a conduit box.
For those seeking a hint: Stand at the Walker Percy statue and imagine yourself in his shoes, gazing at the world as he might have. The cache is several yards to Mr. Percy's 9 o’clock.
I've been considering this hide for months, striking a balance between visibility and longevity.
