The Striding Arches are the work of landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy. There are four of them in this upland area: three are on the summits of Benbrack, Colt Hill and Bail Hill and can be seen from each other on a clear day. The fourth arch is incorporated into an old byre that can be found at the bottom of the valley at Cairn Head.
The arches are made from local sandstone and are free standing meaning that they balance with no mortar or metal work to hold them together.
This cache can be accessed on from the Dalwhat Road and a potential parking spot is listed. It is possible to link the four arches in a long challenging circular walk.ย
When I placed this, I took the path that goes up through the firebreak but came down via Dalwhat Hill descending alongside a deer fence at the edge of the forest. Both routes are equally unpleasant being steep and boggy. The summit and arch are the highlights.
