Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the posted coordinates. You will need to solve an easy field puzzle to find the true hiding spot. Expect a 1.7 mile roundtrip hike, with a short walk (less than 400 feet) between the final and the posted coordinates.

The trails and the cache should be accessible most of the winter but they can be muddy, and you might want spikes if its icy. If we’ve had a big snowstorm you might want to hold off as the trail and the cache might be buried.

Congrats to Hartsdale for the FTF on a very snowy and windy day!!!

This is one of my favorite viewpoints above Woodland Park. I highly recommend taking a break and enjoying the scenery, and if you can come late, it’s a fantastic spot to watch the sunset.

This is also one of my favorite mountain bike trails—fast, winding, and full of great scenery. I’ve ridden it many times, and it makes for a fun downhill if you link the main Lovell Gulch trail for the climb up.

In the fall of 2023, I stopped at my usual overlook, the spot I always pause to take in the view. But this time, something caught my eye—a small memorial sign. I had stopped here before, but I had never seen it, I just never looked in the right direction. The name and the quote stuck with me for reasons I couldn’t explain.

That night, I tried to find out who this person was. I searched online, scoured obituaries, local news stories—nothing. I stayed up far too late, but no matter where I looked, I came up empty-handed.

The next day, I set out on the same ride. As I cruised down the trail toward the overlook, I saw a woman on a white horse ahead of me, standing next to the memorial sign. Not wanting to startle them, I veered onto a small side trail—one I had never noticed before, so I decided to follow it just to see where it led. It wasn’t long before it faded into the brush as it approached the top of a small knoll, so I stopped to take a rest.

That’s when I heard movement behind me. Turning, I saw the white horse had followed me off the main trail. Its rider, clearly surprised, called out that she couldn’t get him to stop—he was insisting on following me.

Something about it felt significant. White horses have long been tied to the spirit world, to messengers, omens, the in-between. Maybe it was just an odd coincidence. But when the woman told me she was a friend of the family of the person on the memorial—the very name I had stayed up half the night trying to learn about—the coincidence grew even stranger.

We stood there for several moments and spoke of people from the past while the wind was shifting through the trees. The white horse, quiet now, stared at me, his dark eyes calm yet expectant, as if he had known me all along.

Even now, I can’t explain it. I had never noticed that sign before, and yet I saw it that day. I had never taken that side trail before, but I veered onto it at exactly the right moment. And I had never seen this woman or her horse before, yet they found me.

As I rode away, the air felt heavier, charged. I’ll never know if it was just an odd string of events or something more. But maybe—just maybe—when you’re out here, deep in these woods, you’re never truly alone.

At the posted coordinates, you should be able to see a sign with a date, to find the final all you need to do is compute the following:

Distance = 4 digit year * 0.119  (result is in FEET)

Bearing = Month number (Jan =1, Feb =2, etc) * 71.8

Project the location of the final from the posted coordinates. You can round to the nearest foot and the nearest degree.

Make note of the year - you'll need it again at the final.

The GeoChecker will tell you if your solution is within 25 feet of the actual location.
