眼鏡橋には安山岩が使用されています。
元々使用されていた安山岩の産地は不明ですが、長崎昭和大水害後の復旧工事では、長崎市内の風頭山で産出された安山岩も使用されました。
安山岩とは
安山岩は溶岩が冷えてできる「火成岩」であり、その中でも地表付近で急速に冷却された「火山岩」です。安山岩は中程度の粘性を持った溶岩から形成されます。
長崎の安山岩
長崎では、石材として安山岩が多く使用されています。 江戸時代には、風頭山、城の古址、岩原などで安山岩の採取が行われていました。
長崎市には、長崎火山岩類と呼ばれる地層があり、安山岩などが広く分布しています。（地質図参照）

Stone Material of Meganebashi Bridge
Andesite is used in Meganebashi Bridge.
The original source of the andesite used is unknown, but during the restoration work after the Nagasaki Showa Heavy Rain Disaster, andesite quarried from Kazagashira Mountain in Nagasaki City was also used.
What is Andesite?
Andesite is an "igneous rock" formed when lava cools. Among igneous rocks, it is classified as a "volcanic rock" that cools rapidly near the surface. Andesite forms from lava with moderate viscosity.
Andesite in Nagasaki
In Nagasaki, andesite has been widely used as a building material. During the Edo period, andesite was quarried from locations such as Kazagashira Mountain, old castle ruins, and Iwahara.
Nagasaki City has geological layers called the Nagasaki Volcanic Rocks, where andesite is widely distributed. (See geological map)
