Although Sherwood is a highly populated area today, this is a recent development. Prior to the first world war it was hardly even a village. And this explains why there is no old church in Sherwood – it was originally part of the Parish of Basford, and, from 1843, part of Carrington parish.
However, the huge growth of the area in the 1920s justified the creation of a new Church of England ecclesiastical area. Initially a “tin tabernacle” sufficed, but in December 1935 the foundation stone for the new church of St Martin’s was laid. However, the first communion service at the church was marred by the death of the church warden.
Additions to the church – a hall and a decorated porch - continued to be added until as late as the 1960s.
As for the cache, this is an offset multicache, though the final cache location is a few minutes’ walk away due to other caches in the area.
Just beyond the church (if you walk up from Mansfield Road), you will see a green telecoms box at the side of the pavement. There are five digits on the box – ABCDE
