Geocache Description:

There is a bit of history here...

You are standing on the Willamette Meridian which is the principle survey line from which the rectangle surveys of Washington state were commenced. William Ives, Deputy Surveyor, commenced the survey on the Willamette Meridian from the initial point near Portland, Oregon, on June 4, 1951. Passing this point on August 14, 1851, he and his crew of five men surveyed the 110 miles from Portland to a point on Puget Sound 8 miles north of this point in 74 days, marking trees every one half mile. Many of these markings may be found to this day.

The monument was dedicated by the Land Surveyors Association of Washington on November 11, 1989, in commemoration of the Washington Centennial.

You are also at the site of Fort Eaton

Fort Eaton was first established by settlers in 1855 and used during the Indian Wars of 1856. It was a small, civilian outpost created to help ward off Indian attacks. The fort was built on Eaton Prairie in present day Thurston County and named after Nathan Eaton, on whose land claim the fort was built. It was a Kentucky-type stockaded square enclosing sixteen log buildings connected by a high stockade that housed a number of families.

The monument marks the site of one of the many stockades built in that period and were subsequently abandoned in 1856. The present monument was erected by the Freedom Community 1932.
