Casta Circa Pyra

ES: Linaje Alrededor del Fuego
EN: Lineage Around the Fire
DE: Abstammung um das Feuer

ENGLISH:

This monument, created by the Russian artist Mariya Anganova, represents a united Guanche family along with their pets, sculpted in stone. It symbolizes the deep bond between the ancient inhabitants of Tenerife and their surroundings. The Guanches, who lived on the island, made use of volcanic resources such as basalt and pumice stone to build their homes, tools, and art. Volcanic rock, abundant in the region of San Miguel de Abona, was their primary material, used in all aspects of daily life.

The stone monument is a tribute to their way of life, their resilience, and their ability to transform their environment. The family depicted in the sculpture reflects the unity that the Guanches valued, which was also evident in their relationship with the geological resources around them. Today, the stone remains as a witness to their existence—a legacy of both the natural and human history of Tenerife. The geological landscape of San Miguel de Abona is characterized by basaltic lava flows, pyroclasts, and tuffs, products of volcanic eruptions that shaped both the land and the lives of these ancient inhabitants. The rocks of the island not only provided material resources but also had spiritual significance, used in rituals and daily activities. This monument serves as a reminder of the connection between the first inhabitants of Tenerife and the volcanic environment that allowed them to thrive, linking family and land through generations.

Pyroclasts are fragments of volcanic material ejected during an explosive eruption. They are classified by size into ash (<2 mm), lapilli (2-64 mm), and blocks or bombs (>64 mm). They consist of volcanic glass, crystals, and fragments of pre-existing rock. They form due to magma fragmentation caused by gas release and can be transported through the air before settling. Their accumulation creates deposits such as ignimbrites or tuffs. Their composition ranges from basic (basaltic) to acidic (rhyolitic), influencing their physical and chemical properties.
