Oasis are an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The group initially consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals), Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs (guitar), Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums). Liam asked his older brother Noel Gallagher (lead guitar, vocals) to join as a fifth member a few months later to finalise their formation. Noel became the de facto leader of the group and took over the songwriting duties for the band's first four albums. They are regarded as one of the defining and most globally successful groups of the Britpop genre.
In 1994 Oasis released their record-setting debut studio album Definitlely Maybe which topped the UK albums chart and quickly became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. The Gallagher brothers featured regularly in the tabloids throughout the 1990s for their public disputes and wild lifestyles. During an infamous interview with NME magazine in 1994, the brothers traded a series of obscene insults. That same year during their U.S. tour, Liam hit his brother over the head with a tambourine during a performance in Los Angeles before walking offstage. Noel quit the band following the incident but rejoined days later. 1995 saw them release (What's the Story) Morning Glory? with a new linup (drummer Alan White). It became the fifth-best-selling album in the uk and the best-selling album in the UK of the 1990s. When Liam and some friends disrupted a recording session for (What's the Story) Noel picked up a cricket bat during the ensuing argument and tried to hit Liam in the head. At this point the group also had a highly publicised chart rivalry with the band Blur dubbed by the British media as the "Battle of Britpop". In 1997 Oasis released their third studio album, Be Here Now which became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history.
Founding members Arthurs and McGuigan left in 1999 during the recording of the band's fourth studio album Standing on the Shoulders of Giants (2000). They were replaced by Gem Archer on guitar and Andy Bell on bass. The animosity between the brothers continued over the ensuing years, as they repeatedly traded verbal barbs during interviews. “He’s the angriest man you’ll ever meet,” Noel once said of Liam. “He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.” Andy White departed in 2004, replaced by guest drummer Zak Starkey, and later by Chris Sharrock. Oasis released three more studio albums in the 2000s: Heathen Chemistry (2002), Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008).
Their relationship had completely deteriorated. According to Noel the brothers had a fistfight prior to their world tour and had begun traveling to shows separately. The breaking point for the brothers finally arrived on August 28, 2009, when the band was set to perform at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris. Liam goes out the dressing room and he came back with a guitar, and he started wielding it like an axe. Noel said in a 2015 interview "He nearly took my face off with it.” While the backstage incident catalyzed their professional breakup, the brothers have offered conflicting explanations for their bad blood. In a 2009 statement following their severance, Noel hinted at toxicity within the band. Meanwhile, Liam claimed Noel objected to his drinking and always had intentions of becoming a solo musician. Liam revealed he hadn’t spoken to his brother since the Paris confrontation. “I haven’t seen him, and we won’t see each other,”
Surprisingly on 27 August 2024, almost 15 years to the date of their 2009 split, Oasis announced that they would reform for performances in the UK and Ireland between May and August 2025. While the brothers haven’t given a reason for their sudden reconciliation, there is speculation it’s at least partially financially-driven. unofficial estimates show the brothers could each make as much as £50 million solely from the concerts. That seems enough to end any feud.
Hopefully they stay friends until then as We've got tickets!!!!!
