Geocache Description:

You’ve located another stop in this set of geocaches that are part of the Visit Abilene Kansas Geotour, find them all, complete your passport and earn your trackable Geocoin.

Located on the end of the restored 1928 Union Pacific Depot, the Visitor’s Center can help you you’re your adventure in one of the best historic small towns, #3 according to USA Today!

California architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood designed Abilene's Union Pacific Railroad Depot and the matching freight depot to the West in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Passenger service began in 1929.

In 1911, Dwight D. Eisenhower departed from this site for West Point Military Academy. He would often use this depot to return home after 1928. His funeral train arrived here in 1969.

When the UP Railroad announced intentions to close the depot building in 1986, a community-wide campaign was launched to preserve the depot. The Abilene Civic Center was officially dedicated in 1988 as a public-use facility. Both the passenger depot and the freight depot were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
