About Bowral Cemetery
Bowral Cemetery is a heritage-listed site, known for its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful landscapes. It houses graves of prominent local figures, including early settlers, military personnel, and influential community members.
This EarthCache examines the geological origins of the cemetery’s gravestones and how different rock types weather over time. The stones used for gravemarkers were quarried, transported, and shaped before being placed here, making them an excellent example of how human activity interacts with natural geological processes.
What is Weathering?
Weathering is the process by which rocks and materials break down over time due to exposure to natural elements. There are three main types:
- Chemical Weathering – Occurs when minerals in the stone react with water, oxygen, or acidic substances, gradually breaking down the rock.
- Physical Weathering – Caused by temperature changes, water, wind, or pressure, leading to cracking, flaking, or fragmentation.
- Biological Weathering – Involves plants, animals, or microorganisms breaking down rock, such as tree roots growing into cracks or lichen producing acids that dissolve minerals.
Different types of gravestone materials react to these processes in different ways, which is what you'll observe in this EarthCache.
Comparing Gravestone Materials & Their Weathering Patterns
The cemetery contains gravestones made of sandstone, granite, marble, and other materials. Some of these stones have lasted for over a century, while others show significant weathering.
- Sandstone – A sedimentary rock that is relatively soft and porous. It tends to weather quickly due to water absorption and freeze-thaw cycles. Some gravestones show heavy erosion, and one even looks like it's about to fall over!
- Marble – Originally smooth and polished, older marble gravestones often develop a rough, crystalline surface due to a process called “sugaring,” where minerals dissolve over time.
- Granite – A much harder rock that resists weathering. Granite gravestones often remain clear and readable, with minimal damage compared to sandstone and marble.
- Iron – Some older cemetery markers or fences may be made of iron. Over time, iron develops rust (oxidation), which can cause structural weakening and flaking of the surface. In damp environments, iron markers may corrode significantly, leading to complete disintegration.
- Concrete – Used in some gravestone bases or simple markers, concrete can suffer from cracking due to freeze-thaw cycles and may develop surface pitting or discoloration from mineral leaching. Over time, lichen and moss can also grow on concrete, further accelerating decay.
- Bronze – Typically used for plaques and memorials, bronze develops a greenish patina over time due to oxidation. While this patina can protect the metal, prolonged exposure to pollution or acidic rain can cause further corrosion, leading to pitting or surface deterioration.
