The Wizarding World Geocache Series

"Upon the signature of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1689, wizards went into hiding for good. It was natural, perhaps, that they formed their own small communities within a community."

— The secrecy surrounding the wizarding world

The Wizarding World, also referred to as the magical community, is the society in which wizards and witches live and interact, separate from non-wizarding society. The two communities are kept separate through the use of charms, spells, and secrecy. Wizards and witches are forbidden to reveal anything about magic to Muggle society due to the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, but that does not mean that the two worlds live entirely apart.

Welcome to the Wizarding World

“They don't need walls and water to keep the prisoners in, not when they're trapped inside their own heads, incapable of a single cheerful thought. Most go mad within weeks."

— Description of Azkaban prison

Azkaban, a repurposed fortress built on an island somewhere in the middle of the North Sea, serves the magical community of Great Britain as a prison for the most dangerous wizards and witches. Steeped in misery and initially a home to Dementors, the prison is now guarded by Aurors, under the authority of the Ministry of Magic, but remains a horribly awful and dangerous place to visit. Using Charms, Azkaban remains hidden from the Muggle world, and is Unplottable.

There is no portkey in existence that will take you to Azkaban, and visiting is no easy feat. Due to heavy restrictions, only respectable Ministry officials and Aurors are allowed to enter. A rumor exists, however, of a secret way to bypass the restrictions, but only one wizard is said to have ever accomplished such a feat: Tom Riddle. While as a student at Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Tom hid clues in selected books within the Restricted Section of Hogwart’s School Library

To uncover the secret coordinates of Azkaban, you must solve “Tom’s Riddle.”

"Tom's Riddle" - The Restricted Section

After months of paging through hundreds of books kept within the Restricted Section of the Library you have found the following three books that seem to offer clues hidden by Tom. What they all mean, however, has yet to be determined, but is - what you believe to be - at the core of his rumored riddle.

The Keeper's Lament: A Study of Infernal Fortresses, by renownd author Bathilda Bagshot, provides a historical account, detailing the construction of prisons like Azkaban, and contains several dark secrets about their magical defenses. While the book’s contents are interesting, the most significant part of this book happens to be on the inside cover. Here, it lists just two students as having checked out the book recently: Lira T. Nurth on 4/6 and Teagan J. Westerly on 1/12.

Unlocking the Unspeakable Runes, written by author Valerius Greystone, includes several chapters that connect Unspeakable Runes to the secretive Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic, suggesting the book contains highly classified or dangerous information. One of the pages has the following letter pairs written in the margin with red ink: P, A and J, W. In the center of the page is a table of runes that translates as the following: A/1, H/2, L/3, P/4, S/5, T/6, X/7, W/8, D/9, J/0

Taming the Amortal and its Remedies, the tome written by author and former Ministry employee Septimus Abernathy, classifies Dementors as "non-beings" or "amortal" and suggests a dark field of study to control or manipulate them. Two dog-earred pages, p. 365 and p. 608, have text discussing the theoretical use of several possible Muggle artefacts as alternatives to the Patronus Charm in protecting against, defending, or defeating dementors. This text is double underlined and seems quite important.

If successful in solving "Tom's Riddle," you will be rewarded with having discovered the secret final coordinates to Azkaban and will be able to appropriate into and out-of this horrible location without being seen or reported to the Ministry of Magic. Beware, however, as there are tales of lingering Dementors who stop at nothing to feed on any happiness you bring with you, thus generating feelings of depression and despair. Chocolate has proven useful in reversing this effect.
