Eccoci a Vertova, comune interamente situato sulla destra orografica della val Seriana, in corrispondenza della confluenza del torrente Vertova nel fiume Serio.
Due i fattori che hanno fatto di questo luogo la posizione ideale per la costruzione del complesso industriale che avete davanti: la vicinanza col fiume Serio e di conseguenza la possibilità di sfruttare l’energia idrica per far funzionare i macchinari, e la vicinanza alla stazione (tuttora esistente) della Ferrovia della val Seriana ( attiva dal 1884 al 1967), che rendeva più agevoli il trasporto delle materie prime.
I fratelli Perani avviarono la loro attività, i Forni Perani, a partire dal 1923, anno di costruzione del primo impianto, denominato poi “forni vecchi”, per differenziarlo dagli ampliamenti aggiunti nel 1943 ( “forni nuovi” ): qui si produceva cemento, calce e dolomite, materia prima per la fabbricazione di cemento.
Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale i forni furono temporaneamente adibiti alla produzione di lignite.
Il complesso era dotato di 4 forni verticali e silos per lo stoccaggio e la macinazione del calcare, nonché dell'inconfondibile ciminiera che è stata demolita il 4 dicembre 2020. I Forni Perani infatti hanno cessato del tutto l’attività nel 1994, e da anni è in atto una riqualificazione dell’area, che ancora non ha trovato compimento e ci permette di vedere ancora ciò che resta di un sito di vera archeologia industriale.

We are now in Vertova, a town entirely located on the orographic right of the Seriana valley, where the Vertova torrent flows into the Serio river.
Two reasons have made this place the ideal position to build the industrial complex you’re looking at: the proximity to the Serio river and therefore the possibility of exploiting the water energy to power the machinery, and the proximity to the still existing station of the Seriana valley railway (active from 1884 to 1967), which made the transport of raw materials easier.
The Perani brothers started their business, Forni Perani, in 1923, when the first plant was built. It was later called "old ovens", to differentiate it from the extensions added in 1943 ("new ovens"): here they produced cement, lime and dolomite, raw material for the manufacture of cement.
During the Second World War the furnaces were temporarily used for the production of lignite.
The industrial complex had 4 vertical kilns and silos for storing and grinding limestone, and an unmistakable chimney which was demolished on 4 December 2020, as Forni Perani closed in 1994. Then, a redevelopment of the area began, and has not yet been completed. This allows us to still see the remains of a site of true industrial archaeology.
