Welcome to Richmond Hill!
I know this location is a bit far from the inner-city, but I promise this area of Queens is worth the visit! South of Atlantic Avenue is South Richmond Hill, also known by locals and beyond as Little Guyana. Little Guyana is home to one of the largest Indo-Caribbean and South Asian populations in the country. Here's a quick excerpt from Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation:
"Little Guyana, located in Richmond Hill, Queens, is home to a significant portion of New York City's Guyanese population, along with immigrants from India and Trinidad and Tobago. The neighborhood spans about 30 blocks along Liberty Avenue, the main commercial strip, which features numerous roti shops, Chinese-Guyanese restaurants, sari emporiums, bakeries, and specialty stores." - Source
If you have the time, I highly recommend heading back towards the A train at Lefferts Boulevard and Liberty Avenue for a bite!
This park has recently been reactivated as part of a community initiative to create more outdoor spaces for people and community organizations to host events and activities! Last September, several community-based organizations, such as Chhaya CDC, South Queens Women’s March, Caribbean Equality Project, Jahajee, DRUM, and SAYA, helped organize the first Richmond Hill Arts Festival, which featured the debut of a play called Flood Sensor Aunty, written and performed by local artists.
This structure also features a Little Library, so feel free to bring a book to exchange at this cache location!
