21 December 1978, The crew of a cargo aircraft spotted lights above the Kaikōura Ranges on New Zealand's South Island. A news team from TV1 and Channel 0 arrived to record footage for a story about the sighting, and were able to capture the lights on camera. The New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research investigated and did not find evidence that the lights were solid objects.
