Above Kočevje, on a hill 970 meters high, once stood the Fridrihštajn Castle. That is how the peak got its name. Between 1423 and 1425, Count Friedrich of Celje, the feudal lord of Kočevje at the time, had it built so he could live there with his beloved, Veronika Deseniška. The ruins of the castle and the remains of the highest-lying castle building in Slovenia still testify to the forbidden love between the two lovers, who briefly found shelter at the castle. Friedrich's father did not approve of the love, and had Friedrich imprisoned while Veronika was drowned. The only reminders of this forbidden love story are the faded memories, the ruins, and a rock once carved by stonemasons as a seat for the lovers.
In the 16th century, the castle came into the possession of Baron Turn, and in the mid-17th century, the Auersperg family, the then owners, built a new castle in Kočevje, causing Fridrihštajn to lose its significance and gradually fall into ruin.
The ruins of the castle can be reached by a short climbing route or a hiking trail that leads from Kočevje, known as the Castle Path.
At the top, there is also a visitor's book and a stamp.
From the top of Fridrihštajn, there is a great view of the Kočevje-Ribnica Valley, Trdinov Peak, and Boč. The Kamnik-Savinja Alps are also visible from the summit.
