In May 1769, Spanish explorers led by Gaspar de Portolá and Father Junípero Serra arrived in San Diego by land and sea, marking the beginning of European settlement in California. They sailed their ships into the bay after a grueling journey from Baja California, carrying soldiers, missionaries, and supplies for Spain’s expansion into Alta California. Their landing at what is now known as Spanish Landing was a critical moment, as it provided a foothold for the establishment of the first mission and presidio in the region.
The journey had been brutal, with scurvy and disease taking a heavy toll on the crew and passengers. When the weary travelers stepped ashore, they found a land inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who had lived along the bay for thousands of years. The Spanish set up camp near the harbor, using it as a staging ground before moving inland to build Mission San Diego de Alcalá. This moment in 1769 marked the start of Spanish colonization in California, forever shaping the history of San Diego and the West Coast.
