The USS Recruit, often referred to as the "USS Neversail," was a unique training facility built by the U.S. Navy at the Naval Training Center San Diego. Constructed in 1966, it was designed to simulate an aircraft carrier for the purpose of training new recruits without the need to actually deploy a real ship. The mock carrier was made of reinforced concrete, and while it had no propulsion or weaponry, it mimicked the size and layout of a real aircraft carrier. It was used to teach recruits about naval operations, shipboard life, and various military procedures.
The USS Recruit served as a stationary training platform throughout the late 1960s to the 1990s, giving thousands of new recruits a hands-on introduction to life on an aircraft carrier. The structure was eventually dismantled in the 1990s as the Navy transitioned to more modern and realistic training methods. Despite its decommissioning, the USS Recruit remains an iconic part of Navy history, remembered for its innovative approach to military training.
