Geocache Description:

Your Task:

  1. Observe the rock surfaces and describe at least two signs of physical or chemical weathering. Look for cracks, fissures, discoloration, or flaking.

  2. Examine the texture of the rock and explain which processes may have contributed to its formation.

  3. Consider the role of Xiamen's climate in the weathering processes observed here, and justify your assessment.

  4. Take a photo of yourself or a personal object next to the rock and upload this image with your log.

Welcome to this EarthCache in Xiamen, where you can explore the fascinating weathering processes affecting the region's rock formations. Xiamen's coastal and rocky landscapes provide ideal conditions to observe various types of weathering and learn more about the geological processes that have shaped this landscape.

What is Weathering? Weathering describes the breakdown and decomposition of rock at the Earth's surface through physical and chemical processes. In Xiamen, the following types of weathering can be observed:

  • Physical Weathering: This form of weathering occurs through mechanical forces that break down the rock without chemical alteration. One example is thermal weathering: due to the strong temperature fluctuations between day and night, the rock expands and contracts, creating stress that causes the rock to crack over time. Salt weathering also plays a role, especially near the coast, where saltwater seeps into fine cracks. As the water evaporates, the salts crystallize and exert pressure on the surrounding rock.

  • Chemical Weathering: In this process, the minerals in the rock react with water and airborne substances. A common phenomenon is hydrolysis, where water alters the chemical structure of certain minerals, gradually decomposing them. Oxidation, the reaction of iron minerals with oxygen, also leads to visible color changes and weakens the rock.
