Climbing at the  Balatonring

EN: Today I would like to show you a real XXL Lost Place - and I must confess that I have completely overlooked it in the last two years since I have lived here! A lot of money was once sunk here and the site was extensively remodelled - all for nothing.

I have explored the area thoroughly to find any remnants of this ambitious project. But the only thing that still reminds me of the plans is a helipad and the ruins of what was probably an imposing billboard. This was probably once intended to announce the glorious future of the project to passing motorists.

And now for the cache! Your goal is - you've probably already guessed it - the ruins of the billboard. But be warned: the cache is well secured and hangs quite high up, on the second pillar from the back right.

However, I would urge you not to take any unnecessary risks! No cache in the world is worth ending up in hospital for. You can only reach it without help if you are a really experienced climber and have been blessed with exceptionally long arms and legs.

Unfortunately, I'm not a professional climber myself and helped myself with a few slings - and yes, I managed it on my own, even though I'm not the youngest anymore. But remember: safety first! It's better to come back with the right equipment or an experienced climbing partner.

One last tip: If the logbook slips out of your hand, please bring it back up. And remember: only those who sign the logbook are allowed to claim the find. Photologs do not count!

Klettern am  Balatonring

DE: Heute möchte ich euch einen echten XXL-Lost Place zeigen – und ich muss gestehen, dass ich ihn in den letzten beiden Jahren, seit ich hier lebe, völlig übersehen habe! Dabei wurde hier einst eine Menge Geld versenkt und das Gelände weitläufig umgestaltet – alles umsonst.

Ich habe das Areal gründlich erkundet, um Überreste dieses ambitionierten Projekts zu finden. Doch das Einzige, was noch an die Pläne erinnert, ist ein Helipad und die Ruine einer vermutlich imposanten Plakatwand. Diese sollte wohl einst vorbeifahrenden Autofahrern die glorreiche Zukunft des Projekts ankündigen.

Und nun zum Cache! Euer Ziel ist – ihr ahnt es sicher schon – die Ruine der Plakatwand. Aber seid gewarnt: Der Cache ist gut gesichert und hängt ziemlich weit oben, an der zweiten Säule von rechts hinten.

Ich möchte euch jedoch eindringlich bitten: Geht kein unnötiges Risiko ein! Kein Cache der Welt ist es wert, dafür im Krankenhaus zu landen. Ohne Hilfsmittel könnt ihr ihn nur erreichen, wenn ihr wirklich geübte Kletterer seid und mit außergewöhnlich langen Armen und Beinen gesegnet wurdet.

Ich selbst gehöre leider nicht zu den Kletterprofis und habe mir mit ein paar Bandschlingen geholfen – und ja, ich habe es allein geschafft, obwohl ich auch nicht mehr der Jüngste bin. Aber denkt daran: Sicherheit geht vor! Kommt lieber mit entsprechender Ausrüstung oder einem erfahrenen Kletterpartner zurück.

Ein letzter Hinweis: Sollte euch das Logbuch aus der Hand rutschen, bringt es bitte wieder nach oben. Und denkt daran: Nur wer sich ins Logbuch einträgt, darf den Fund für sich verbuchen. Photologs zählen nicht!

EN: The Balatonring was a planned motorsport racetrack near Sávoly, a small town on the southern shore of Lake Balaton. The track was to be used mainly for motorbike racing and was intended as a venue for the MotoGP. Construction work began in 2008, but the project was never completed due to financial difficulties and political controversy.

The track was designed as a modern racing facility that would meet international standards. In addition to the sporting aspects, the Balatonring was also expected to boost the region's economy, as its proximity to Lake Balaton would attract tourists. A track length of around 4.6 kilometres with spacious grandstands for spectators was planned.

Unfortunately, the project stalled when the financing from private investors and state funds began to falter. The global financial crisis of 2008 also played a role. In 2010, the project was finally abandoned and the construction work remained unfinished. Today, the site is little more than a wasteland, with a few foundations and road fragments reminding us of the ambitious plans.

Despite this failure, Lake Balaton remains a popular tourist destination, and motorsport fans often visit the Hungaroring near Budapest instead, where Formula 1 takes place every year.

DE:Der Balatonring war eine geplante Motorsport-Rennstrecke in der Nähe von Sávoly, einem kleinen Ort am Südufer des Balatons. Die Strecke sollte hauptsächlich für Motorradrennen genutzt werden und war als Austragungsort für den MotoGP vorgesehen. Die Bauarbeiten begannen im Jahr 2008, doch das Projekt wurde aufgrund finanzieller Schwierigkeiten und politischer Kontroversen nie fertiggestellt.

Die Strecke war als eine moderne Rennanlage konzipiert, die internationalen Standards entsprechen sollte. Neben den sportlichen Aspekten versprach man sich durch den Balatonring auch einen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung für die Region, da die Nähe zum Balaton Touristen anziehen sollte. Geplant war eine Streckenlänge von rund 4,6 Kilometern mit großzügigen Tribünen für Zuschauer.

Leider geriet das Projekt ins Stocken, als die Finanzierung durch private Investoren und staatliche Mittel ins Wanken geriet. Auch die weltweite Finanzkrise von 2008 spielte eine Rolle. Im Jahr 2010 wurde das Vorhaben schließlich endgültig aufgegeben, und die Bauarbeiten blieben unvollendet. Heute ist auf dem Gelände kaum mehr als eine Brachfläche zu sehen, auf der einige Fundamente und Straßenfragmente an die ambitionierten Pläne erinnern.

Trotz dieses Fehlschlags bleibt der Balaton ein beliebtes Reiseziel, und Motorsportfans besuchen stattdessen oft den Hungaroring in der Nähe von Budapest, wo jährlich die Formel 1 stattfindet.
