Geocache Description:

Tasks:

  1. Observe: Describe the different colors you can see in the stones. How many distinct colors can you count?

  2. Hypothesis: What do you think caused the variation in color between the stones? Consider environmental factors.

  3. Are some rougher or smoother than others? What could this indicate about the types of rock?

  4. Take a photo of yourself and / or an object on site.

Log this cache as “Found it” and send me the answers to the questions to “silka03.earthcache@gmail.com” or via Geocaching Message Center. Not in your log! You may then log immediately. I will get in touch with you.

Have fun!

At this location, you can observe the fascinating diversity of colors in the stones that make up this wall. Each color represents a different type of sedimentary rock, each with its own unique mineral composition and formation history.

What happens here?

The stones in this wall come from different types of sedimentary rocks, each formed under varying environmental conditions. The color variations are primarily due to differences in mineral content and the conditions present when the rocks formed:

  • Beige to Light Brown: Indicates the presence of quartz and feldspar, common in sandstone and other siliceous rocks.

  • Reddish to Brown: Suggests iron oxidation, where iron minerals reacted with oxygen, similar to rust formation.

  • Gray to Dark Brown: Points to organic matter or environments with low oxygen levels, slowing down oxidation.

By examining these stones, you can get a glimpse into the diverse geological history they represent.

Geological Processes:

  1. Sediment Deposition: Each rock type formed from sediments deposited in different environments, such as rivers, lakes, or deserts.

  2. Compaction and Cementation: Pressure over time compacted these sediments, while minerals in groundwater "glued" the particles together.

  3. Chemical Reactions: Oxygen levels, water presence, and organic material led to different mineral formations, causing the color differences.
