Geocache Description:

Tasks for the EarthCache

  1. Observation: Describe the color distribution of the rock. What colors can you identify?

  2. Mineral Identification: Try to identify quartz, feldspar, and mica in the rock.

  3. Crystal Size: Measure the average size of the mineral crystals and explain what this indicates about the cooling rate.

  4. Hypothesis: Why might this granite be found at this location? (Hint: Consider tectonic processes and erosion.)

Log this cache as “Found it” and send me the answers to the questions to “silka03.earthcache@gmail.com” or via Geocaching Message Center. Not in your log! You may then log immediately. I will get in touch with you.

Have fun!

This EarthCache takes you to a fascinating natural phenomenon: red granite. At this site, you can learn about the properties, formation, and coloring of this impressive rock.

What is Granite?

Granite is an igneous intrusive rock that forms in the Earth's crust through the slow cooling of magma. This process allows large mineral crystals to develop.

Formation

  1. Magma Chambers: Molten rock (magma) collects in magma chambers within the Earth's crust.

  2. Slow Cooling: Over millions of years, the magma cools slowly, allowing large crystals to grow.

  3. Mineral Formation: The main components of granite are quartz, feldspar, and mica.

  4. Uplift and Erosion: Tectonic movements and erosion gradually bring granite formations to the surface over time.

Coloring

The characteristic red color of granite primarily comes from potassium feldspar. Depending on its chemical composition, this mineral can take on a reddish to pinkish hue. Dark inclusions usually come from biotite (dark mica) or other mafic minerals, while quartz often appears as transparent to white components.
