Geocache Description:

Marvin Kuhns

"Local Criminal with Robin-Hood-like Reputation"

Whether he was stealing horses, breaking out of jails & prisons, or dining with a judge while on the run, Noble County ’s most famous Desperado, Kuhns, was also one of it’s most endearing characters is buried here at Wolf Lake Cemetery, which was founded in 1832. He was born in 1867 and his first crime was stealing a suit of clothes from Perry Gray ’s store in Wolf Lake at age 16, thus began a string of escapades. As a horse thief, he broke out of the Noble County Jail three times, twice deserted the U.S. Army, once fled the Ohio State Penitentiary and several times fought gun battles with area authorities. Though crime is no laughing matter, Kuhns had a certain comic flair that set him apart from the common horse thief. He was almost always welcome in his hometown where he sought refuge from the authorities. Aware of his presence, few neighbors would rarely inform the police. Kuhns would show up at a local restaurant for breakfast, while on the run. He would walk nonchalantly into the local newspaper office and compliment the editor on his unbiased coverage of Kuhns’ crimes. Kuhns was well known for his charitable nature, a tendency that earned him a Robin Hood-like reputation. When a blind, elderly woman was in dire need, Kuhns sent her money anonymously through friends. While in the Ohio State Penitentiary, he sent money (again, anonymously) when he heard some former neighbors from Noble County had lost everything in a fire. All in all, Kuhns spent 16 of his 40 years behind bars.

Once you are at the Marvin Kuhns gravesite using the coordinates given for the cache, decipher the following puzzle to get the coordinates for the final location:

N41' A.BC9' W85' D.564

A= 2 digit number

In order to find A, go directly east of the Kuhn gravesite to view the Marker gravesite. Add the birth year numbers of each digit for Christiann Marker and put that 2 digit number in for A.

B=1 digit number

For B, go directly east of the Marker gravesite to locate the Miller gravesite and determine the most common single digit number in the years of Zoe and Albert Miller's birth and death years. Use this number for B.

C=1 digit number

For C, go directly east of the Miller gravesite and locate the Redenbo gravesite and determine the difference of the ages of Isaac and Susie at the time of their deaths using their birth year and deceased year. The difference of their age at the time of their death in years equals C.

D=2 digit number

For D, go directly south of the Marker gravesite across the road path to locate the Scarlett gravesite. Subtract the age of JP and Sarah at their age of death and add 6. D equals the age of JP at the time of his death - Sarah's age at her death + 6.
