Il 22 settembre 1971 il Cap. Pil. P.A.N. Valentino Jansa delle Frecce Tricolori, nel corso di un’esercitazione, sorvola Palmanova, la città stellata, con il proprio aereo.
L’aereo andò in avaria ed in picchiata stava per piombare proprio all’interno della Fortezza.
Il capitano avrebbe potuto azionare il dispositivo che proiettava all’esterno della cabina il sedile di pilotaggio, quindi salvarsi con il paracadute, lasciando così che il suo bimotore si schiantasse a terra senza controllo: il velivolo avrebbe sicuramente colpito case e provocato delle morti. Il capitano Jansa riuscì a deviare l’aereo, che andò a schiantarsi fuori dal centro storico, sulla cinta muraria, sul bastione Foscarini, in prossimità della caserma Montezemolo. La manovra chiaramente salvò Palmanova ma non la vita del coraggioso pilota.
I resti del suo aereo sono ancora ben visibili in quello che è stato denominato, dopo il tragico evento, “Parco dell’Aviatore”.

On September 22, 1971, Captain Pilot P.A.N. Valentino Jansa of the Frecce Tricolori, during a training exercise, flew over Palmanova, the star-shaped city, in his aircraft.
The plane malfunctioned and, in a steep dive, was about to crash directly inside the Fortress. The captain could have activated the device that ejected the pilot’s seat from the cockpit, allowing him to save himself with a parachute while letting his twin-engine aircraft crash uncontrollably to the ground. The plane would have certainly hit houses and caused fatalities.
Captain Jansa managed to steer the aircraft away, and it crashed outside the historic center, onto the city walls, on the Foscarini bastion, near the Montezemolo barracks. His maneuver clearly saved Palmanova but not his own life.
The remains of his aircraft are still clearly visible in what has since been named, after the tragic event, the "Parco dell'aviatore"
