Voluta da Napoleone nell’ambito del progetto di ampliamento delle fortificazioni, questa è una delle tre caserme seminterrate nei bastioni. Progettata dal generale del Genio francese Chasseloup nel 1808, presenta dimensioni notevoli e si compone di due facciate in pietra viva: una provvista di feritoie e rivolta al baluardo per la difesa, l’altra con porte e finestre, aggettante verso l’interno della fortezza. Ai lati del piano terra erano sistemati i locali con i forni per la panificazione, necessari per le guarnigioni. Al primo piano erano collocate le camerate e nel sottotetto vi era uno strato di terra per attutire i colpi dei cannoni dell’artiglieria nemica provenienti dall’alto. La Caserma venne nominata “Montesanto” dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Restaurata nel 1993 dalla Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia, viene utilizzata oggi come sede di uffici e per manifestazioni culturali.

Wanted by Napoleon within the projects of the expansion of the fortifications, this is one of the three barracks in Palmanova placed in the bastion’s basement.
Designed by the General of the French military Engineers Chasseloup in 1808, it has huge dimensions and consists of two façades in stone: one provided with loopholes and facing the bulwark for defense, the other doors and windows, projecting towards the inside of the fortress. On the sides of the ground floor were located the rooms with bakery ovens, necessary for the garrisons. On the first floor there were the dormitories and in the attic there was a layer of earth to cuschion the shots of the enemy artillery coming from above. The Barrack was named Montesanto after the First World War.
Restored in 1993 by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, it is now used as an office and for cultural events.
