Geocache Description:

The Mobile Tensaw River Delta is the largest river delta and wetland in Alabama. It encompasses about 260,000 acres in a 40-by-10-mile area, and is the second largest delta in the United States

The Delta is ecologically important and includes a wide variety of habitats, including mesic flood plains, cypress gum swamps, brackish water marshes, bottomland forests, and submersed grass beds. As one of the most biologically diverse regions in both Alabama and the United States, it is home to 126 fish, 46 mammal, 69 reptile, 30 amphibian, and at least 300 bird species, including more than 110 of which nest in the region. The delta's considerable biodiversity has led to it being described as an "American Amazon" by naturalists.

The delta lies in a river valley that began forming several million years ago. Many separate inland streams joined as they flowed southward across land, which was once covered by the Gulf of Mexico

The "Five Rivers Delta" refers to the Mobile Tensaw Delta, where the Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee, and Blakeley rivers flow into Mobile Bay, and is a focus for outdoor recreation, conservation, and education

Boating and fishing are popular in the Mobile Delta. The Bartram Canoe Trail provides a system of waterways by which boaters, kayakers, and conoers may explore the delta. The area is known for its excellent bird watching. Hunting is also common in the upper delta

Come join us outside the Five Rivers Resource Center for some food, geochat, and maybe a little fun. We will arrive at 9:30am, and plan to serve pizza around 11:30am. We will also have plenty of water and sodas on ice. Stay for five minutes, or stay all day, but try to make it out. You won't regret it!!!

We will be set up just inside the woodline of the nature trail, look for picnic tables
