It was a beautiful evening, one that held the promise of excitement, camaraderie, and perhaps a bit of mischief. The 16th Annual Saskatoon Cache and Release (SCAR) event had arrived, and with it, a 24-hour marathon that would challenge the sharpest minds, the most nimble feet, and the most dedicated Geocachers in all of Saskatchewan and beyond. This year was particularly special—2025 marked the 25th anniversary of Geocaching, a milestone worthy of celebration, and the SCAR event was going to be one for the ages.
As the clock struck 5:30 PM on Friday, May 23rd, the hunt officially began, and ends at 5:30pm May 24th, 2025. The caches, hidden with care and precision by avid Geocachers from all over, were now fair game. The rules were simple, though they came with an important caveat: if your Geocaching username included more than one person, all members had to be present at each cache to sign the logbook together. A team effort was the only way to claim those coveted finds.
The adrenaline was palpable as groups of enthusiastic cachers dashed off, fueled by the thrill of the hunt. The buzz of excitement echoed through the streets of Saskatoon, as the event unfolded like a grand treasure hunt, where every turn brought new challenges, hidden gems, and moments of pure Geocaching joy.
Among those participating was a team that had been there from the very beginning. Sixteen years ago, they had set out on their first SCAR adventure, unsure of what it would become, but filled with a spirit of exploration and discovery. Little did they know, that first event would evolve into something legendary—a 24-hour Cache-a-thon that had drawn participants from across the province and even neighboring provinces. The bonds forged in the excitement of each year’s event were nothing short of magical.
And this year was no different. In the midst of the hunt, a particular cache stood out. It was placed in honor of SCAR2024, and while it could not be found until 5:30 PM on Friday, May 23rd, those who had prepared for this moment knew it was a special one. The cache, nestled in a quiet corner of the city, was a test of stealth—something that had become the trademark of SCAR itself. After all, nothing beats the thrill of finding a hidden treasure when you know the clock is ticking and you’re not the only one with eyes on the prize.
The cache itself was cleverly camouflaged—covered with leaves, nestled among the trees, and carefully hidden in nature’s embrace. It was designed for stealth, to blend seamlessly with the surrounding foliage and make it nearly impossible to detect by the casual passerby. In fact, this cache had been placed with muggles in mind—those unsuspecting folks who might wander through the area unaware of the Geocaching world unfolding around them. The location was perfect, hidden in plain sight yet disguised by nature’s artistry.
As the first few teams arrived, they were met with the challenge of blending into the surroundings. Stealth was not just encouraged, it was required. Moving quietly through the underbrush, each cacher worked together, aware that their every movement was being watched. They carefully lifted the leaves, revealing the well-hidden cache, which contained a logbook ready to mark their achievement.
But the hunt was far from over. As the night deepened and more cachers arrived, the challenge remained: to not only find the cache but to do so without being spotted. The thrill of discovery heightened by the knowledge that they were part of a much larger, coordinated hunt, working together as a community to share in the joy of Geocaching.
"Please return this cache as it was," the cache advised, a reminder for all future cachers. "Covered with leaves, hidden in nature, and stealthy enough to keep muggles at bay." The community knew well that each cache was a treasure, and its return to its original state was a promise to those who would follow.
As the sun dipped below the horizon and the SCAR event continued late into the night, the community came together—not just to hunt and hide, but to celebrate what had become a tradition, a celebration of the spirit of adventure, the love of Geocaching, and the bonds that had lasted for 16 glorious years.
So, whether you found one cache or ten, whether you came to hide or to seek, the true victory lay in the journey, the stories shared, and the memories made. Because in the end, it’s not just about the smiley faces added to your collection, it’s about the adventure itself.
Enjoy the hunt, cache on, and here's to many more SCAR events to come! 😎🤠🐕🦺🥰
