Geocache Description:

This cache is part of my “River Nile” series. If you want THAT to make sense, you need to read the description for “Sauce of the Nile” (GCB2PFQ).

There will be a Bonus Cache associated with this series. The information needed to locate the cache can be found on the logs of selected caches on the Oran Park side of Camden Valley Way. This section of the series is still being completed.

Some caches in this series are named for geographic feature that bears a (vague!) resemblance to a similar feature of the real Nile River. This cache is one of those.

The Sebara Dildiy Bridge crosses the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. The bridge crossing South Creek near the location of this cache is quite eye-catching with its grey steel forming a graceful curve, as it takes people between an area which I dare not name (which you may or may not have any interest in visiting … let’s just pretend it doesn’t exist) and Cunningham Park playground (see relevant cache for more on this park).

But being eye-catching is pretty much where the resemblance stops between this bridge, and its Ethiopian namesake. That bridge is a 17th century arch bridge, made from local stone. One of the arches was destroyed during WW II, and no successful repairs were done until 2002, when a truss bridge, supported by the existing superstructure, was set up, forming a functional, if not aesthetic repair.

When the repair eventually failed (in 2005), a cable suspension bridge for pedestrians was built a short distance away, perhaps bearing a closer resemblance to our bridge here than the original one the cache was named for.

FYI … In Greek mythology, a (real, live) sphynx once lurked outside the Greek city of Thebes (not the Egyptian) asking travellers a riddle. Those who couldn’t answer correctly were eaten.* Here’s a (safe) riddle … What sticks, but has no glue?

* Look it up! I’m not lion.

Please ensure container is properly closed and returned with ‘handle’ end down.

JoWaNaLe777 takes a well-earned spot on the FTF podium. And the crowd goes wild!!
