Geocache Description:

Built on the river Le Néal, a very old dam gave rise to the Néal waterfall. On July 25, 1929, a decree issued by the President of the Republic declared the works to be undertaken for the construction of a waterfall on the Rance and its affluents to be in the public interest, in order to set up the Rophemel hydroelectric plant. The valley was flooded, giving rise to Lac de Néal. Extract from the archived cache description

As can be seen on the geological map of the area, numerous faults show the intense seismic activity that has affected this part of Brittany. Bands of quartz veins show the major displacements that took place in this area.

The most northerly quartz band is well exposed at Guenroc, where it forms a picturesque wall some 15 metres thick, dipping around 70° to the north. It breaks off to the east at the contact of a submeridian fault, but a crushed zone oriented N 70 to N 90°E forms the relay from La Chalotais to Ville-ès-Vannier. At Guenroc, the quartz has a saccharoid appearance and is cut in two planes: the first parallel to the map direction of the quartz band, the second submeridian. The most important silicified band begins south of Guitté (les Tréhorels) and continues uninterrupted as far as the Etang de Néal, where its transition to mylonites can be seen (Rénéal quarry).

Cataclasis is a tectonic phenomenon that causes the crushing and grinding of a rock in the vicinity of an anomalous contact. In the quartz granodiorite of Bécherel and Dingé, the granite present in the area of this earthcache, micrograined quartz-plagioclase-biotitecordierite enclaves can be observed, deeply affected, in the vicinity of major east-west fractures, by increasing cataclasis, with a brecciating character (Rophemel, Rénéal, Hédé, etc.). The cataclasic elements, which vary in size, are angular in shape.

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery

Go to the coordinates of this earthcache to make your observation. It mainly concerns the shape of the rocks that can be seen at the Néal waterfall.

Question - At the coordinates of this earthcache, look at the rock at your feet. What shape are the boulders and the rock itself? From the information presented in the description of this earthcache, can you name the phenomenon that caused the rocks to take on this shape?

Obligatory souvenir photo - Please post in your log a photo of yourself or one of your favorite geocaching objects (or even just your username written on a sheet of paper or your hand) taken with the waterfall in the background.

Log in this "Found it" cache with your photo in your log and send me your answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com (Message Center) mail, and I will contact you in case of a problem.

To remind: there is no box to find to validate an earthcache! You can log your discovery but also send me your answers as soon as possible.
